Campaign Story
About the project
The Anganwadi Centers (AWCs) in this region face infrastructural and manpower gaps, which hinder children and women from accessing essential facilities, particularly in providing nutritious food for pregnant and lactating mothers and implementing Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) for 3- to 6-year-olds. The lack of basic infrastructure in schools and poor maintenance of existing facilities compel students to drop out, often leading them to early marriage or work to support their family’s livelihood.
Making a difference
CRY America’s Project Pragathi is dedicated to ensuring quality education for children in the intervention area, reducing child labor, and mainstreaming them into formal education. Key activities under the project include enrolling children above 3 years into the preschool program at Anganwadi Centers and sensitizing parents of school dropouts, consequences of child labor, and about the importance of education. Additionally, teachers are encouraged to visit the families of child laborers to persuade parents to send their children back to school. Another crucial aspect of the project is the formation of Children’s Collective and Adolescent Girls’ Collectives to sensitize the community on issues of child labor and child marriage.
The Way Forward
● Submit requisitions to convert 3 Anganwadi Centres into model AWCs
● Ensure the enrolment of 155 children aged above 3 years in Anganwadis for preschool education
● Mainstream 130 dropout children aged 6–18 years into schools by involving 135 Panchayati Raj Institution members, 150 teachers, 165 Community-Based Organizations, and 100 Village Level Child Protection Committee (VLCPC) members
● Conduct career counselling sessions in 7 high schools for Grade 9 and 10 students
● Remove 70 children from child labor and mainstream 42 identified children into schools
Strengthen Village Child Protection Committees (VCPCs) by involving 150 members across 25 committees
● Avert or prevent 65 child marriages
● Train 2,000 children aged 10–18 years from 81 Children’s Collectives and 63 Adolescent Girls’ Collectives in Year 1 life skills modules
